There’s no better place to experience the beauty of autumn than North Conway, nestled away in the heart of New Hampshire’s White Mountains. Every fall, the landscape transforms into a kaleidoscope of red, orange, and gold, making this little corner of New England one of the best destinations in the country for enjoying fall foliage—and going on some epic hikes! Here are some of the best spots in the area for enjoying the natural beauty, including hiking trails and paths for all skill levels.

Cathedral Ledge

Cathedral Ledge is just a short drive from downtown North Conway, and it offers one of the most iconic views in the whole region. The hike up is relatively short but steep, and you’ll be rewarded with sweeping views of the Saco River Valley and the surrounding forest dressed in its autumn colors. For those who prefer a gentler option, you can also drive to the top and take a short walk to the lookout.

Diana’s Baths

This easy, family-friendly trail is only about a mile round trip, but it leads to one of the most exhilarating spots in the area. Diana’s Baths is a series of cascading waterfalls and pools tucked into the forest, and in the fall, the mix of rushing water and colorful leaves makes for a truly magical experience, not to mention it’s a great place for a relaxed afternoon walk or even a picnic!

Black Cap Trail

The Black Cap Trail is a local favorite for its moderate difficulty and spectacular panoramic views. At just under two miles round trip, the trail winds through peaceful woods before opening up to a rocky summit where you can see Mount Washington off in the distance. On a clear fall day, the scenery is nothing short of unforgettable. And the best part? Dogs are allowed as long as they’re on a leash!

Echo Lake State Park

The Echo Lake Trail is a fairly easy hike with a big payoff. This general trail circles the lake in under a mile and offers beautiful reflections of the surrounding cliffs and foliage on the water’s surface. There are plenty of photo opportunities, so don’t forget to bring your camera! You can also connect to longer trails leading up to Cathedral Ledge if you’re looking for more adventure.

Glen Ellis Falls

Located near Jellystone Park™ Glen Ellis, this short and easy walk leads you to a breathtaking sixty-four-foot waterfall that plunges into a rocky pool below. In the fall, the rushing water framed by brilliant foliage creates one of the most picturesque scenes in the whole region! It’s a quick stop, but one that leaves a lasting impression.
