When many people think of bed and breakfasts, they imagine tacky lace curtains, squeaky, ancient floors, and awkward, never-ending small talk made over breakfast. But today’s B&Bs have evolved far beyond those old stereotypes, and now, they offer a charming, personalized touch to every stay that includes comfort, privacy, and of course, plenty of delicious foods and thoughtful amenities! If you’re only familiar with bed and breakfasts through the myths and stereotypes that you’ve overheard, here’s what you need to know about how they really operate and accommodate travelers!

Myth #1. You Have to Share a Bathroom with Other Guests

Most B&Bs today feature private, beautifully appointed bathrooms, often with luxury touches like spa tubs, heated floors, or rain showers. Many also include amenities like hair dryers, special soaps and shampoos, scented towels, and a wide assortment of other neat, thoughtful touches. It won’t be anything close to a shared, communal bathroom and you’ll have just as much privacy as you would at home.

Myth #2. You’ll Have to Socialize with Strangers

While some guests do enjoy the social atmosphere that some bed and breakfasts offer, many also offer flexible dining options, from private tables to in-room services, so you can take your meals however you’d like (not to mention, you’ll have a great menu to choose from with locally-sourced options). The hosts also won’t talk your ears off or force you to partake in group activities, and there’s no requirement to spend time with other guests. Your experience can be tailored to be as private or social as you’d like!

Myth #3. They’re Only for Couples

While bed and breakfasts are definitely perfect for romantic getaways, many also welcome families, solo travelers, and business guests with open arms. Family suites, kid-friendly amenities, and flexible accommodations are all available to help make everyone feel right at home. You may even be surprised to hear that many also proudly welcome pets!

Myth #4. They’re Old-Fashioned and Low-Tech

If you’re imagining floral wallpaper in every bedroom and doilies on every table, you’ve got the wrong idea—bed and breakfasts of today proudly embrace modern, stylish décor, and contemporary amenities. You’ll often find beautifully renovated spaces that feel just like home and have many new comforts like television and Wi-Fi. They’ll also incorporate local art and historic flair when possible, but it won’t feel like you’ve stepped into a time machine at all.
